When we catch Kay Davis' roller skating vids (and the 90s jams in the background) on Instagram it fills us joy, some much needed positivity and feel good vibes. Kay joined the Crumb family back in early 2020 after we learnt about her inspirational art practise, multi-disciplinary creative skills and 90s aesthetic. We took a moment to chat to her about her inspirations, thoughts on the importance of diversity and how she ended up on skates! Make sure you give her playlist she curated for us a listen to brighten up any day, below :)

Can you tell us a bit about your arts practice and where you draw inspiration from?
I’m a visual artist and workshop facilitator who bounces in between different practices such as painting and textiles design. I create all kinds of products that celebrate youth and Black joy, often referencing objects that are nostalgic and of sentimental value. This may come in the form of print patterns, customisations, colouring sheets, wrapping paper, stickers and more. For me Black joy is one of the best feelings and I try to communicate that not only in my visuals but experiences.
What does diversity + inclusivity mean to you?
Diversity and inclusion is consciously being active with how we share space and hold space for different communities. It’s making room for others to not only tell their stories but also be seen and heard without interjecting. It’s taking responsibility in amplifying voices and stories without discrimination.
We're BIG fans of your skating over here at Crumb, tell us a bit about how you got into it?
I had a lot of time on my hands during the beginning of spring and decided to treat myself to some skates as a birthday gift. What I didn’t know was that it would become so addictive and keep me in good spirits during a global pandemic. The feeling I get from skating is so care-free, music feels 10x greater on skates and there’s always something to learn. I’ve been welcomed into such a beautiful community and somehow found my tribe during the middle of a pandemic.
Any tips for lockdown?
My advice is not to compare your lifestyle with other peoples. Take a moment to brainstorm your needs and act accordingly. Whilst tips are great not everyone has the luxury of keeping safe and are still at work, away from home. However, I think wherever you may be setting boundaries and not neglecting your needs are important. This could be a great opportunity to ask yourself what are your needs?
Thanks Kay!
